How Instagram Delivers Images & Videos: CDN Architecture Explained

A technical deep-dive into Meta's media delivery infrastructure, signed CDN URLs, edge caching, and WebP/AV1 compression algorithms.

Meta processes billions of photos and videos daily. Delivering these assets within milliseconds to global users requires one of the most sophisticated distributed Content Delivery Networks in existence.

1. Anatomy of an Instagram CDN URL

Every image URL generated by Instagram follows a structured format:

https://scontent-iad3-1.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.2885-15/e35/p1080x1080/4321_n.jpg?_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.cdninstagram.com&_nc_cat=104&_nc_ohc=abcXYZ&edm=AP_V10E&oe=661ABC12&oh=00_AYB39

Key parameters:

  • scontent-[airport-code]: Identifies the regional edge server cluster (e.g., iad3 for Washington Dulles).
  • e35 / p1080x1080: Image processing quality and resolution preset.
  • oe: Hexadecimal timestamp defining the exact second the URL signature expires.
  • oh / _nc_ohc: HMAC SHA-256 cryptographic signature verifying URL integrity.

    • 2. The Edge Caching & Delivery Lifecycle

    1. Request Ingress: When a user queries a profile, edge routing sends the request to the closest geographic PoP.

    2. Cache Hit: If cached at the edge, the image is returned in under 20ms.

    3. Cache Miss / Re-signing: If expired, the edge queries origin storage, generates a fresh signature token, and caches the new object.

    Guide FAQ

Why do direct Instagram image links stop working after a few days?

The 'oe' parameter in the URL enforces cryptographic expiration to prevent unauthorized permanent hotlinking.
